THE CLUNY BRIDGE 30/03/2013

There was a busy programme of events at  the club today, starting at 11.00am with the official opening of the new bridge at the 17th  on Rosemount by Sir William Macpherson of Cluny and Blairgowrie.  The bridge will be known as The Cluny Bridge in  honour of Sir William and in recognition of his generosity to the club over many years.

Shortly afterwards members gathered in the clubhouse for a special presentation to the club by Captain Alisdair Drummond.  The surprise turned out to be a framed flag, signed by  all the members of the 2012 Junior Ryder Cup Teams of Europe and the USA, who, Alisdair assured us, will be the  stars of the future.  In addition, Managing Secretary Douglas Cleeton has presented a  flag signed by the victorious 2012 Ryder Cup Team. The framed flags have been hung at the entrance to the Pro Shop.
The club flag was unfurled a few minutes later by the Lady Captain and Gents Captain to huge cheers from the members.  The new golfing season is well and truly underway.

(P.S.  Entries close tomorrow for the Knockout competitions, so if you haven't signed up, there is still time)

CAPTAIN VERSUS VICE-CAPTAIN 2013

We made it!  After a  week of wondering if the annual Captain versus Vice-Captain Match  would take place, the weather cheered up and Lady Captain, Vike Brown,  marked the start of the  2013 golfing season with a fine drive from the 1st tee on Rosemount, in brilliant sunshine.
The sunshine did not last long, unfortunately,  but considering the  poor weather we have endured of late, playing conditions were remarkably  good and it was just great to be out playing to full greens.  Our thanks to the greens staff for their heroic efforts to get the course ready for play today.

The format was foursomes with several matches going to the 18th. In the end the Lady Captain's team  edged  a victory  of 8 - 6 over the Vice-Captain's team.
Game over we enjoyed soup and sandwiches, with lots of chat,  in the dining room. Here's hoping this really is the start of our  golf  for 2013.

Ready to go! Margaret and Vike celebrate the start  of the season. Vike drives off in style to great applause....and thanks to Jean Laburn for deputising for  Vike in the Match.  It's all smiles as the Winner receives the trophy.

LATEST NEWS...

Lady Captain Vike Brown
As we approach the official start of our golfing season  the weather continues to be very unpredictable. We are hopeful that  the Captain versus Vice Captain match can go ahead and the draw is now on the main club web-site.  Please meet at 9.30am on Friday March 29th  for the official photograph. The Lady Captain has asked past Captain Jean Laburn to represent  her -  and Jean may be quietly hoping to extract revenge for being on the losing side last year! The Shotgun start is at 10.00am.

If  anyone  can't make the golf but would like to meet up with the ladies to celebrate the start of the golfing season, do please come along and join us for soup and sandwiches, cake and  tea/coffee to be served in the dining room after the match.  The price is £7.50  and you can let the caterers know if you are coming. We appreciate that we are approaching Easter weekend and members may have family commitments, but  it would be nice to see as many ladies as possible.

On Saturday, March 30th,  at 11.00am the new bridge at the 17th on Rosemount will be officially named, at that location. Everyone is invited.  You are also invited for a complimentary drink in the clubhouse  at 12.00 noon prior to the Gents Opening Match. Captain Alisdair Drummond will  make a special presentation to the club in the main hall at 12.15pm.  At 12.25pm Alisdair and Vike will raise the club flag to mark the opening of the season.

If the weather causes any changes to the arrangements for Friday, there will be an announcement on the main club web-site and the Blog

MAIL ON SUNDAY RESULTS

Today Blairgowrie Mail on Sunday Team, Susan Arbuckle, Sandy Bushby, Janette Hamilton, Barbara Cuthbert and Louise Whitehead, played their first round against Strathmore. The weather was showery, but it didn't dampen the spirits. After 4 pairs finished their matches, the score stood at two and a half to Blairgowrie and one and a half to Strathmore. The ladies waited and watched the last pair on the course to complete their match on the 18th only to find that Strathmore had won the fifth match making the score two and a half to two and a half. This meant that pair number five Sandy Bushby and Cathy McNab had to play a sudden death playoff to decide the winning team. They had to go and get their clubs back out from their cars and put their damp golf gear on. Luckily the sun came out and so did all the team members who came out to support Sandy and Cathy. The sudden death went to the second hole where Sandy managed to sink a crucial putt to get the win for Blairgowrie. Well done to the Blairgowrie team.

What great fun we had at the Members Get-together 2013!  The Lady Captain introduced Isobel Harvey and husband Tom who treated  us to a hilarious account of their cycle trip from Lands End to John o' Groats.  Isobel is a born raconteur, mixing up songs with  chat and quirky quiz questions, keeping everyone entertained from start to finish.
It was a very pleasant evening and so nice to catch up with members, old and new.

RAINED OFF.....

The weather had the last laugh today, with heavy rain and wind making playing conditions very unpleasant, so it was no surprise that there were NO takers for golf.  The Winter League and Stanley Clark  are now complete, and the winners will be announced shortly.

The Lady Captain would like to remind everyone that the Members Evening takes place on Thursday 14th March, 6.30pm  for a welcome drink, followed by a one course meal and coffee at 7.00pm.  We shall then hear the account of Isobel Harvey's  cycle trip from John o' Groats to Lands End.  This is a mixture of slides, quizzes,  audience participation, surprises and prizes.  It promises to be  FUN. Tickets, price £7.50, from the caterers.  If you will not be at the Club before Thursday, please phone (01250) 872622  to reserve a ticket.
